Going to counseling is a very effective way to handle difficult situations in your life. If you are suffering from a traumatic event, or even a mental illness, counseling can help. Many people have tried counseling and haven't gotten the results that they wanted. Although it takes time to find the right therapist for you, there are certain things that you can do to make sure that you are getting the best experience possible from your counseling. Here are some things you need to know.
1. Be Upfront About Your Goals
You can't go into therapy with the expectation that the therapist will "fix you." There are too many factors, too many elements and this is simply not a realistic expectation. Instead, you need to have very realistic goals and you need to discuss them with the therapist upfront. For instance, some of these goals could be "I want to handle stress better," "I want to feel in control of my life," or "I want to be able to hold a steady job," and so forth.
By being upfront about your attainable goals, the therapist can help you to achieve them. Simply saying that you want your problems to go away is not helpful to you or the therapist. If you aren't sure what your goals are, be honest about that. You and the therapist can sit down together and assess what some good goals would be.
2. The Work Happens Mostly At Home
When you attend therapy, the therapist will give you the tools that you need to change your life. You will meet with the therapist only a couple hours each week. The rest of the time you are on your own to put into practice the things you are learning. This means that you have to be ready to make these changes in your life. You may need to change your home environment. You may have to forgo certain activities to work on your counseling goals and so forth. But know that it is up to you to make those changes.
In addition, the results need to be something that you want. People who go to counseling simply to appease someone else rarely find success. You have to be motivated to make those changes. A counselor can talk till they are blue in the face, but until you are ready to hear and apply those changes, it will change nothing.
